Wolves Women's Volleyball Season Recap

Wolves Women's Volleyball Season Recap

The Algonquin Wolves women's volleyball team made a trip back to the OCAA qualifying game after finishing 5th in the OCAA East with a 11-7 record.  Read about their season below.

Regular Season

The Wolves started off the season playing their first 5 games on the road.  They would finish the stretch with a 3-2 record after picking up wins against Loyalist, La Cité, and Georgian.  Algonquin finally had the chance to play in front of their home fans on November 11th and 12th when they took on the Durham Lords and the George Brown Huskies.  These were 2 of the biggest games in the first half of the season as Durham was at the top of the East standings and George Brown was jockeying for a top 4 spot with the Wolves.  Coach Everton Senior's group put up a good fight against the top ranked Lords but eventually fell 3-1 on Friday night making Saturday's matchup with the Huskies even more important.  After dropping the first set to the Huskies, the Wolves bounced back to take the next 2.  George Brown bounced back in the 4th to force a 5th and deciding set.  Algonquin dominated the final frame winning it 15-6 and taking the match 3-2.  The team finished the 1st half of the regular season with a 3-0 win over the Centennial Colts giving them a 6-4 record going into the holiday break.

The Wolves started off the 2nd half of the season with a 3-0 win in Peterborough over the Fleming Knights.  They went into the month of February with an 8-6 record, positioning them in the 5th spot of the East standings.  Their final 4 games of the regular season had some key matchups, including the Canadore Panthers (3rd East) at home on February 4th, and the George Brown Huskies (4th East) on February 10th in Toronto.  The Canadore game was also the final home game of the regular season, and Algonquin had a chance to celebrate Morgan Ott, Hanna Tuinstra, Sabaath Mannucci, and Kristina Renwick who were playing their final home games in an Algonquin Uniform.  When these two teams met in the 1st semester Canadore came away with a 3-1 win.  This time around the Wolves avenged their loss and took the match 3-1.  This improved their record to 9-6 going into their final 2 games at George Brown and Centennial.

They split the final weekend losing 3-1 to George Brown and winning 3-1 to Centennial to finish the regular season 11-7, good for 5th in the OCAA East heading into the qualifying round.

Qualifying Game @ St. Clair (3-0 Loss)

With the regular season wrapped up, it was time to move on to the playoffs.  After finishing 5th in the East the Wolves 1st round matchup was the St. Clair Saints who finished 3rd in the West with a 14-4 overall record.  Unfortunately St. Clair and the lengthy trip to Windsor proved to be too much for Algonquin as the Saints took the match in straight sets ending the Wolves season.

It was a season full of ups and downs for Algonquin.  With most of the roster set to return in 2023-24 the future is bright for this group that is still young.  They gained valuable experience that will help them moving forward.  The Algonquin Students' Association would like to congratulate the team on a successful year.  We look forward to seeing them back on the court next season.
