The Algonquin College Sports Field was packed on Wednesday night with roughly 550 fans who filled the stands to take in the home opener of the 2025-26 varsity season. The fans brought the energy from the pre-game HypeZone onto the sidelines and the Wolves didn't disappoint, coming away with a double header sweep over the St. Lawrence Surge.
The team got the party started drawing first blood in the 22nd minute. The Wolves pressure forced a Surge turnover and #11 Danika Mader sent a ball intended for #13 Samantha Jones that deflected off the St. Lawrence defender and in the back of the net for the 1st goal at home this season. Algonquin would add a 2nd goal in the 39th minute courtesy of 3rd year midfielder Kassandra Da Cruz who received a short pass off the corner kick and sent a seeing eye shot off her left foot that found its way in. The Wolves looked poised to take a 2-nil lead into the half, but St. Lawrence would regain momentum when Gwen Arsenault scored off a free kick in the 45th minute to cut the lead in half going into the locker room.
Algonquin would regain the momentum in the 2nd half scoring 3 unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead. Rookie Striker Hannah Parks got the first one in the 57th minute off an assist from fellow rookie Annika Dubeau. #25 Alex Aubin scored a beautiful header off a corner kick from Da Cruz for the 4th goal in the 62nd minute. Aubin would assist on the 5th and final Wolves goal, feeding Danika Mader for her 2nd of the game in the 66th minute. The Surge would add a late goal on a penalty kick, but it was not enough as Algonquin took the 3 points and improved to 3-0 on the season.
With an undefeated record, Algonquin currently holds the top spot in the OCAA East standings. The team will take advantage of some well deserved rest. They will be back in action on Friday September 19th at 6:00 pm at home against the Cambrian Shield. It will be the 1st food cupboard game of the varsity season with all proceeds going towards the SA Food Cupboard. Make sure to get your tickets and bring a non-perishable food donation.
