OCAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FINAL 4 PREVIEW

OCAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FINAL 4 PREVIEW

Thanks to a 59-45 win over the Lambton Lions the Algonquin Wolves women's basketball team has punched their ticket to the Final 4 which will take place at home in the Jack Doyle Athletics and Recreation Centre.

Semi-Final #1 Mohawk Mountaineers vs Fanshawe Falcons

The 1st semi-final will tip-off at 5:00 pm on Friday February 28th and will feature the Mohawk Mountaineers taking on the Fanshawe Falcons.  The Mountaineers finished 3rd in the OCAA West standings with an 11-5 record.  They reached the Final 4 by beating the Centennial Colts 90-61 in the opening round and the Georgian Grizzlies 65-51 in the quarter final.  The Falcons finished 5th in the OCAA West with a .500 record.  They appear to be peaking at the right time, taking down Seneca 85-51 in the opening round before upsetting the #1 team in the West, the Niagara knights 56-53 in the quarter final.  We are expecting a nail biter as these two teams split the season series.  Mohawk took the 1st matchup 74-73 and Fanshawe got their revenge late in the regular season earning a 68-63 overtime win.

Semi-Final #2 Algonquin Wolves vs Humber Hawks

The 2nd semi-final is set to start at 7:30 pm and will feature the home Algonquin Wolves taking on the 2nd seed in the west, the Humber Hawks.  The Wolves go into the game with an undefeated record and the #1 spot in the CCAA National Rankings.  The home crowd at the ARC has been electric for the 1st two playoffs games and we are expecting more of the same on Friday night.  Humber reached the Final 4 by taking down George Brown 92-39 in the opening round and the Loyalist Lancers 84-62 in the quarter final.  This game will feature the OCAA East and West Players of the Year as Dasia McDonald was the recipient for the East and Kia Watt for the West.  Watt was also named the OCAA overall Player of the Year.

The semi-final winners will play for gold at 5:00 pm on Saturday March 1st and the bronze medal game will go at 2:30 pm.

The teams are competing for an OCAA championship and a spot in the CCAA National Championship that will take place from March 12th to 15th at St. Thomas University in Fredricton, NB.
