QUARTER-FINAL PREVIEW - WOLVES HOST LIONS IN OCAA CHAMPIONSHIP REMATCH

QUARTER-FINAL PREVIEW - WOLVES HOST LIONS IN OCAA CHAMPIONSHIP REMATCH

After a hard fought win over the Sheridan Bruins in the first round of the OCAA playoffs, the Wolves women's basketball team will turn their attention to the quarter-final where they will face a familiar foe in the Lambton Lions.  These teams have made a habit of meeting in the playoffs.  This will be the 5th consecutive season that their paths will cross.  Last year Lambton was the host of the women's basketball Final 4.  The Wolves and Lions battled it out in the championship game but Lambton and their home crowd proved to be too much for Algonquin to overcome.  This time around it is the Wolves turn to lean on their home crowd in hopes of a quarter final win and the right to host the OCAA Final 4 the following weekend.

Lambton finished the year with a 9-7 record, good for 4th in the OCAA West.  They reached the quarter-final thanks to a 67-42 win over the Durham Lords in the opening round.  The Lions have a veteran group with lots of experience, having won OCAA gold and silver at the CCAA Nationals in 2024.  At the top of the Wolves scouting report will be the two veteran guards Breanna Pretty and Maddie Bishop.  Pretty, who was the OCAA Player of the Year in 2023-24 averages 17.2 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.  Bishop is the Lions floor general averaging 38.5 minutes per game while putting up 13.6 points.

The Wolves key to victory will come on the defensive end of the floor.  They have been the top defensive team in the OCAA all season long which has been a cornerstone to their success.  They will need to lean heavily on Libby Hirst, Jessica De Haan, Mallory Katz and Piper Hatherall to control the glass as Lambton is the 4th best team in the OCAA on the offensive glass.  The Wolves will also need a big performance from 4th year guard Dasia McDonald who leads the way on both ends of the floor, leading the league in assits and steals.

The Wolves go into the game as the #1 team in the CCAA National Rankings.  Make sure to come out to the ARC on Saturday February 22nd at 1:00 pm to help them continue their playoff run and earn the right to host the OCAA Final 4!  Admission is FREE
