Algonquin Shares the Loss of Former Women's Basketball Player Chiderah Obiahuba

The Algonquin community is saddened to hear of the recent passing of former women's basketball player Chiderah Obiahuba.

She was a beloved member of the Algonquin Thunder during the 2015/16 season and was a large contributor to the team's success.  She was loved by her teammates, coaches and members of the athletics department.

"Chiderah was an inspiration to all who crossed paths with her. She brought so much joy to everyone around her and she genuinely cared about the wellbeing of others.  She stood up for what she believed in, and although she was a fierce competitor on the court, she was so humble and down to earth.  I am crushed and will miss her so much" said Laura Bond, former head coach of the Thunder.

Chiderah, who wore #15 for the Thunder, was an impact player in her rookie season, due to her ability to contribute on both ends of the floor. She finished the year averaging 9 points and 2.4 assists in just over 30 minutes per game, but her impact was felt largely on the defensive end.  The Thunder guard averaged 8.2 rebounds and 3.2 steals per game and often drew the assignment of guarding the other team's best player.  At the OCAA awards banquet prior to the championship, Chiderah was recognized for her efforts earning the OCAA Defensive Player of the Year award.
