With the 1st semester coming to a close, let's take a look back at the 1st half of the season for our women's basketball team!
The Wolves are currently undefeated in OCAA regular season play with a 7-0 record. Their most recent win over Durham proved to be the toughest test of the semester in a game featuring the two top seeds in the East. Algonquin eventually came away with a 60-53 win, thanks in large part to the performance of 2nd year guard Dasia McDonald. Dasia finished with 24 points, 8 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 assists.
The undefeated record has the team ranked 2nd in the OCAA overall rankings and 9th in the CCAA national rankings going into the break.
Algonquin's top dogs all semester long have been McDonald and 2nd year forward Libby Hirst.
Dasia is averaging 17.2 PPG, which is good for 8th in the OCAA. She has had an impressive semester shooting the ball with a 47.3 field goal percentage (4th in OCAA) and a 40.9 3pt field goal percentage (2nd in OCAA).
Hirst has been a force inside the paint all season long. She is currently averaging a double double with 10 points and 11.2 boards. The 11.2 rebounds has her in 3rd place on the OCAA rebounds per game list. Her top performance came on November 11th at George Brown when she finished with 25 points and 15 rebounds, earning her OCAA star of the week honors.
Algonquin has also gotten a significant contribution off the bench from 1st year guard Piper Hatherall. Piper is currently averaging an efficient 8.5 points per game while shooting 52.4 % from the floor. She will go into the 2nd half of the season with the top field goal percentage in the OCAA!
The Wolves will kick off the 2nd half of the season on January 20th and 21st on the road at Loyalist and St. Lawrence. The regular season will wrap up on February 18th at home against the Durham Lords. The team has put themselves in a good spot to host a crossover game with hopes of qualifying for the OCAA final 8 hosted by Niagara College from March 2nd to 5th.
Make sure you come out to the ARC and catch some exciting basketball action in 2023!
