Sunday February 2nd marks the final game of the regular season for your Wolves men's and women's volleyball teams, where they will travel to Durham College to take on the Lords. With both teams coming off wins over the Fleming Phoenix, it sets up both games to potentially have a huge impact on final season standings.
The women's team (12-5) are one game behind the Durham Lords (13-4) and have an opportunity to shake up the OCAA East standings. The Lords claimed a 3-1 win over the Wolves in their first meeting, but if Algonquin is able to win this game in straight sets, the Wolves would hold the tie-breaker. The Wolves bring a well-balanced offensive attack into this matchup, with multiple scoring threats inCarys Tenthorey, Natasha Lauzon, Cambria Alford, and Grace Pate all of whom have surpassed the 100-point mark this season. Where things get complicated is if La Cite (12-5) beats Fleming (0-17) there will be a 3-way tie for 2nd place and it will come down to a win/loss ratio between the 3 teams to determine the order. Regardless of the outcome, the Wolves are still guaranteed to host a home crossover match next weekend.
The men's team (8-9) will be looking for some redemption against the Lords (10-7) after dropping the first meeting 3-1 back in October. However, this time around the Wolves' lineup will look a bit different. With the addition of Liam Arnold-Paquette, and the emergence of 1st year Middle Mateo Nunez-Kruus, Algonquin has rounded into form in the second half of the season. Both teams enter the match with identical 3-3 records since the winter break, setting the stage for what should be a highly contested match. The stakes are also slightly higher for the Wolves playoff positioning, as a win plus some help could see them move up one spot in the standings. The scenario is, if Algonquin beats Durham, and George Brown beats Loyalist, then the Wolves and Lancers would finish the season 9-9. Since the two teams split their head-to-head series with identical 3-0 victories, the final standings would be decided by sets win/lost ratio to determining who claims the sixth seed in the OCAA East.
