Both our women's and men's soccer teams went into the weekend with identical 7-0 records. They would face their toughest tests yet on the road in the GTA facing the Seneca Sting and Centennial Colts on back to back days. In both cases, Seneca and Centennial are amongst the top teams in the OCAA East, meaning the results would go a long way in determining the standings going into the playoffs.
VS Seneca
In a rare occurrence this season, our men's team played the 1st game of the double header on back to back days. The action kicked off on Saturday October 4th at Seneca College's Newnham Field. This was a battle for 1st place in the East with both teams holding the top 2 spots in the East standings. Algonquin entered the game with a slight edge as Seneca and Durham played to a 2-2 draw earlier in the season.
Seneca was able to strike first in the 9th minute when Lorenzo Mayer scored off a free kick from the top of the box. The Wolves kept pushing and were able to even the score late in the half when the Sting keeper took out Algonquin striker Gershom Dupuy leading to an Alessandro Vivolo penalty shot. Lorenzo Mayer would give Seneca the lead back in the 71st minute off another free kick this time to the left side of the box. To add insult to injury, the Wolves were forced to play down a man for the final stretch of the game due to a red card. Seneca would capitalize scoring 2 more goals in the 82nd and 84th minute. The Wolves would manage to get one back with Alix Basa scoring a header off a pass from Gershom Dupuy, but it was too little too late as Seneca took the win 4-2.
VS Centennial
With little time to recover, Algonquin was back at it on Sunday October 5th in Scarborough when they took on the Centennial Colts. Centennial entered the game with a 4-2-1 record after suffering their 1st loss of the season at the hands of the Sting on Wednesday October 1st.
This time around, the Wolves were able to get on the board first, in the 18th minute when Gershom Dupuy was in alone on the Colts keeper and made no mistake. The Wolves doubled their lead a minute later when Alix Basa found Alessandro Vivolo who split two Colts defenders and sent a left footed strike into the back corner of the net. The OCAA's leading scorer wasn't done there, adding another one just before the half to extend the Algonquin lead to 3-nil. This time Gershom Dupuy slipped a ball through the Colts defense leaving Vivolo alone against the keeper. Algonquin would enjoy a 3-nil lead going into the locker room.
The Wolves would add one more in the 68th minute off the foot of rookie Shawn-Allen Guillaume who scored his 4th goal of the season. Alix Basa earned his 2nd assist of the game on the play. Centennial would get 1 back late in the game but that was it as the Wolves bounced back from Saturday's loss to earn a 4-1 victory. Algonquin keeper Nick Parry had a big impact on this one making key saves to keep the game out of reach for the Colts.
With 1 game to go, the Wolves record is 8-1. Algonquin is hoping for some help on the out of town scoreboard down the stretch. A combination of an Algonquin win in their final match of the regular season and a Seneca tie or loss in either of their last 2 matches would see the Wolves clinch the #1 seed in the East going into the playoffs.
Make sure to join us at the Algonquin Sports Field on Saturday October 11th when the Wolves take on the George Brown Huskies in the final regular season game of the 2025 season. Make sure to come early as we will be honouring our graduating seniors prior to each match. The women's game is set for 1:00 pm with the men's game to follow at 3:15 pm.
