Angus Wong Named New Head Coach of the Algonquin Wolves Men’s Soccer Program

The Algonquin Students' Association is excited to introduce Angus Wong as the new Head Coach of the Wolves Men's Soccer Program.  Angus has been a part of the coaching staff since the 2017 season in an assistant coaching role.  Since he joined the staff, the team earned an OCAA silver medal (2017) and has been named East division champions for 3 consecutive seasons (2017-2019).  Angus is an Algonquin Alumnus who had success in the classroom and on the pitch, graduating with honours from the Small and Medium Enterprise Management program and earning many team and individual accolades as the Thunder goalkeeper from 2002 to 2004.  Here is a short list of those achievements:

  • 2002 OCAA Champion & CCAA National Champion

  • 2003 OCAA Silver Medalist

  • 2003 CCAA All-Canadian

  • 2004 Thunder Team Captain

  • 2004 OCAA Champion & CCAA Silver Medalist

Outside of Algonquin, Angus was the starting goalkeeper for Ottawa Fury PDL (Premier Development League) from 2005 to 2006. He also played for Ottawa St. Anthony Italia in 2006 where his team would go on to win the Challenge Cup National Championship, the Ontario Cup Championship, and the CPSL (Canadian Professional Soccer League) Open Cup Championship.

The program will be adding another Alumnus to the staff with the addition of Kieran Spring.  Kieran wore Algonquin colours from 2015 to 2018, spending his last 2 seasons as team captain.  He has been coaching with the West Ottawa Soccer Club since 2011.

Angus will be taking over for former head coach Mike Gagliano who has been a part of the coaching staff since 2010, and had been the head coach since the 2014 season.  Mike will continue his involvement with the Algonquin Men's Soccer program, as he will be stepping into an advisory role.  The SA would like to to thank Mike for his contributions to the program.  Since he took over as head coach, Algonquin was named East Division Champions all 6 seasons, won 3 OCAA silver medals (2015,16,17) 1 OCAA gold medal (2014) and 1 CCAA bronze medal (2015).  Mike was also named OCAA East Coach of the Year for 2 consecutive seasons in 2016-17 and received the OCAA Coach of the Year Award in 2017.

The SA Varsity Athletics Department would also like to take the opportunity to thank Loui Legakis for his contributions to the program.  Loui had been a part of the coaching staff since the 2012 season.  He played a key role in tactical analysis and player development throughout his time as an assistant coach.  Our student-athletes and the program in general have benefitted from his support and experience.

Make sure you come out to Algonquin this fall to catch some exciting soccer action!  The first chance to check out the team at home will be on Saturday September 17th against the George Brown Huskies.  The women's game will begin at 1:00 PM with the men's game following at 3:15 PM.
