The OCAA recently released their league awards and two members of our men's basketball team received honours.
5th year guard Simon Desta was named OCAA East 6th man of the year. Desta is in his 5th year with the Algonquin men's basketball program. The Ottawa native spent most of his career as a starter. This season he has embraced a new role providing instant offense off the bench for his team. Desta averaged 14.9 points in 23.2 minutes per game. He shot an impressive 40.6 % from 3, good for 6th in the OCAA. Desta finished off the regular season with his best performance knocking down 9 3's and scoring 29 points against St. Lawrence on February 8th. He carried that momentum into the playoffs going 4 for 5 from deep in the 1st half against Niagara.
2nd year forward Tesloch Luk was named an OCAA East 1st Team All-Star. Luk had an incredible 1st season with the Wolves, finishing a close 2nd on the OCAA scoring list averaging 19.9 points per game. Luk proved to be a 3 level scorer, proving to be a threat at the rim, from mid range and from 3. His ability to get to the line and knock down free throws at a 77.6% clip made him hard for teams to stop. Luk also grabbed an average of 7.6 rebounds per game. His top performance came on November 9th when he scored 35 points to go along with 6 rebounds in a 100-94 win over Loyalist. The Ottawa native had a strong performance in the 1st round of the playoffs against Niagara scoring 22 points, grabbing 5 rebounds and dishing out a season high 7 assists.
Desta, Luk and the Wolves will be in action on Sunday February 23rd in Toronto when they will take on the Humber Hawks in the OCAA quarter final with a spot in the Final 4 on the line.
