WOLVES WEEK 12 RECAP

WOLVES WEEK 12 RECAP

All four of our teams played at home this weekend as we hosted back to back doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday night.  Our Wolves volleyball teams welcomed the Loyalist Lancers to the Jack Doyle Athletics and Recreation Centre on Friday while our basketball teams played the Seneca Sting on Saturday.  Here's how it went.

Women's Volleyball (8-2)

Our women's volleyball team took on a Lancers squad that they had seen just a couple weeks earlier in Belleville.  The Wolves managed to sweep the season series earning 3-1 wins in both matchups.  The home team won the first, third and fourth sets 25-17, 25-21 and 25-17 while Loyalist took a close 31-29 second set.  Carys Tenthorey had another strong performance with 18 kills, 4 aces and 14 digs.  Natasha Lanzon and Riley Lancia each had 12 kills each.  Last week's Wolves Den Athlete of the Week Cambria Alford had 11 kills and 15 digs.

Loyalist Box Score

Algonquin now sits in 2nd place in the OCAA East standings with just one game remaining in the first semester.  They will make the short trip across town to La Cité on Wednesday to take on the Coyotes at 6:00 pm.  The last time these two teams met the Wolves came away with a win in a 5 set thriller!  Make sure to head down to La Cité and cheer on your Wolves!

Men's Volleyball (4-6)

Our men's volleyball team were hoping to avenge a 3 set loss to the Lancers from 2 weeks prior.  The team was feeling good after back to back wins against George Brown and Fleming.  The Wolves rode the positive momentum to take down the Lancers in straight sets, winning 25-21, 27-25 and 25-17.  Mateo Nunez Kruus had a solid game with 11 kills and a .476 hitting percentage.  Ryan Lincoln finished with 12 kills and 6 digs.  Mahmoud Abdelaziz had 11 kills and 8 digs.  Karl Rawlins added 8 kills and 3 blocks.

Loyalist Box Score

After a tough start to the season, the Wolves have now won 3 in a row and 4 of their last 5 matches.  They will finish off the semester on Wednesday November 27th at 8:00 pm when they take on the La Cité Coyotes on the road.

Women's Basketball (7-0)

Our women's basketball team played their final game of the first semester this past Saturday when they welcomed in the Seneca Sting (3-4).  The Sting put up a fight in the first half trailing by only 2 with 1:23 remaining in the 2nd quarter, but the Wolves would end the half on a 9-0 run to take a 34-23 lead into halftime.  It was all Algonquin from there as the Wolves outscored the Sting 33-16 in the 2nd half to take the game 67-39.  Dasia McDonald had an efficient 19 points on 5/9 from the field and 7/11 from the foul line.  She also added 10 steals for the double double.  Libby Hirst had a strong performance with 11 points and 8 boards.  Cooper Drover scored 12 points on her birthday!  Jessica De Haan had a strong game off the bench with 12 points.

Seneca Box Score

For the third straight season the Wolves have finished the first semester undefeated and at the top of the OCAA East.  They currently hold the 3rd spot in the CCAA national rankings.  The team will be back in action on January 11th when we host the Centennial Colts.

Men's Basketball (6-3)

Our men's basketball team took on a Seneca Sting squad that had a tough start to the season but are starting to figure things out after a big win over #2 Georgian the week prior.  The game started out close with the Wolves holding a 1 point lead after the first quarter, but unfortunately the 2nd and 3rd quarters belonged to the Sting leading to a 16 point deficit to start the fourth.  The Wolves put a run together and got the lead down to 6 points off a CJ Gallaza 3 pointer, but unfortunately it was too little too late and Seneca walked away with a 79-68 win dropping our record to 6-3.  Seneca's strong inside presence was an issue all night for as the Sting scored 40 of their 79 points from inside the paint.  Despite the loss, Simon Desta had his usual strong offensive game with 17 points shooting 40% from 3 point land.  Ted Braden had 10 points and 7 boards.  Tesloch Luk finished with 23 points and 8 rebounds while shooting 83% from the foul line.

Seneca Box Score

Our Wolves still hold the 3rd spot in the OCAA East standings.  We will look to finish the semester on a high note on Friday when we host the La Cité Coyotes for a 7:00 pm tip-off.

We enter the final week of the first semester with 3 of our teams in action against crosstown rival La Cité.  Make sure to stay tuned to AlgonquinWolves.com for all the details.
