Our volleyball teams returned home this weekend for back to back doubleheaders against the George Brown Huskies and Fleming Phoenix. Our basketball teams were in Oshawa on Friday to take on the Durham Lords and our men's team finished off the weekend in Peterborough against the Fleming Phoenix. Here's how it went.
Women's Basketball (6-0)
Our women's basketball team put their undefeated record on the line on Friday against the Durham Lords who went into the game at 2-2. The Wolves have been dominant defensively this season giving up the least amount of points per game in the entire OCAA. They flexed that defensive muscle on route to a 67-23 win.
Meaghan McNamara had a strong performance going 4 for 6 from behind the arc and scoring 14 points in 17 minutes off the bench. Jessica De Haan had 11 points and 5 rebounds. Leah Hirst and Paige Foster had 9 points a piece. Dasia McDonald had another strong performance with 8 points, 8 assists and 7 boards.
The Wolves are getting set for their final game of the first semester this Saturday November 23rd at 4:00 pm at the ARC when they take on the Seneca Sting.
Men's Basketball (6-2)
Our men's basketball team faced a tough test on Friday when they took on a Durham team that is undefeated and ranked 11th in the CCAA national rankings. The Wolves showed they were not intimidated, coming out of the gate on a 16-4 run. The Lords would answer with a run of their own and the first quarter ended with a 20-17 Algonquin lead. The rest of the game was neck and neck until Durham made a final 4th quarter push and came away with a 82-76 win. Jevon Westcarth was the games leading scorer with 21 points and 9 rebounds. Simon Desta had his usual strong offensive performance with 16 points. Tesloch Luk and Albert Opena were also in double figures with 11 and 10 points each.
On Saturday the Wolves looked to bounce back against a Fleming team who were coming into the game with a 2-4 record after a win against La Cité the night prior. Despite their record, the Phoenix have been playing teams tough all season and this one was no different. Fleming got off to a hot start and went into the locker room with a 52-46 lead. Algonquin made the right adjustments and tightened the screws defensively to win the 2nd half 37-21 and ultimately took the game 83-73. Jansen Balmaceda had an efficient offensive game scoring 20 points on 6 for 10 from the field, 2 for 2 from deep and 6 for 6 from the charity stripe. Tesloch Luk had a 22 point, 10 rebound double double. Albert Opena and Simon Desta were alson in double figures with 10 points each.
We have two men's basketball games left this semester and both of them are at home. On Saturday November 23rd at 6:00 pm the Seneca Sting will come to town. We will close out the semester on Friday November 29th at 7:00 pm against crosstown rival La Cité.
Women's Volleyball (7-2)
On Friday November 15th against George Brown, we hosted the first annual Serve for the Cure night. This was the conclusion of the women's volleyball fundraiser in support of Breast Cancer Canada and their competition with the women's basketball team. After putting in a lot of work, the team raised over $3000 coming up just shy of the women's basketball total. Together both teams ended up raising almost $7000 for the cause. The SA Athletics Department is very proud of all the work put in by both teams who demonstrated what it means to be Part of the Pack!
