Our 4 indoor sports teams were in action in week 9. Our basketball teams opened up the home portion of their seasons on Friday against the Georgian Grizzlies while our volleyball teams were on the road in Barrie on Friday before taking on Seneca in Toronto on Saturday. Here's how it went.
Women's Basketball (3-0)
For the first time since their ¼ final win against Mohawk in February 2024, our women's basketball team was back at home for an OCAA game. They would face their first real test of the season as the Georgian Grizzlies came to town with a 2-0 record. Fans at the ARC were treated to a defensive battle as the Wolves came away with a low scoring 47-42 win. Cianah Miller was the games leading scorer with 16 points on an efficient 7 for 10 from the field. Dasia McDonald had 9 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Sydney Moore also had 9 points with 6 of them coming from behind the arc.
The Wolves are back at home next weekend. On Friday they will host the 0-3 St. Lawrence Surge at 6:00 pm. On Saturday it will be Shoot for the Cure Night when the Wolves host the Loyalist Lancers at 4:00 pm. You can help the team reach their fundraising goal by donating at the link below:

Men's Basketball (3-1)
Our men's basketball team is off to their best start in recent years. They were at home for the first time this past Friday when they took on the Georgian Grizzlies who went into the game at 2-1. Algonquin got off to a slow start on both sides of the ball and dug themselves an early hole trailing by 10 after the first quarter. They would spend the next 3 quarters crawling their way out of that hole and got almost all the way back. On the final possession of the game a 3 point attempt by Tesloch Luk hit back rim and the Wolves had two attempts at a put back but unfortunately the ball didn't bounce their way and Georgian escaped with an 80-78 win. Jansen Balmaceda was a bright spot for the Wolves with 16 points and 5 assists. Simon Desta and Teslock Luk were also in double figures with 16 and 15 points each.
Next up for Algonquin is a date with the 0-4 St. Lawrence Surge on Friday at 8:00 pm at the ARC. On Saturday at 6:00 pm the 3-1 Loyalist Lancers will come to town. The Wolves will be looking to bounce back after a pre-season loss to the Lancers in Brockville at the Battle of the St. Lawrence.
Women's Volleyball (3-2)
Our women's volleyball team hit the road for the second time this season. On Friday they were in Barrie to take on the Georgian Grizzlies (1-4). The Wolves took the first, second and fourth set on route for a 3-1 win. Rookie Carys Tenthorey had a huge game recording 17 aces which may be an OCAA record for aces in a game. She also added 6 kills and 14 digs. Cambria Alford finished with 12 points on 10 kills, 1 ace and 1 block. Natasha Lauzon had 10 points with 7 kills, 2 aces and 1 block.
On Saturday the Wolves took on the Seneca Sting (5-0). Despite a close first set, the Sting proved to be the better team on that day winning in straight sets. Rookie Riley Lancia was a bright spot for her team recording 10 points with 7 kills, 2 aces and a block.
Next up is a rare Wednesday game against crosstown rival La Cité at 6:00 pm at the ARC.
Men's Volleyball (0-5)
Our men's volleyball team was in Barrie last Friday to take on the Georgian Grizzlies (5-0). The young Wolves gave the Grizzlies all they could handle but unfortunately they fell in 5 sets. Mahmoud Abdelaziz and Julian Tran led the way with 18 kills each.
The Wolves looked to bounce back on Saturday against the Seneca Sting (3-2). Once again they went neck and neck with their opponent but unfortunately fell in 5 sets. Mahmoud and Julian were once again the Wolves leading scorers with 14 and 9 kills each.
The Wolves will look to get the monkey off their back on Wednesday when they welcome crosstown rival La Cité to the ARC for a 8:00 pm match.
We look forward to a busy week ahead in Wolves athletics. Our men's soccer team is getting set to compete in the CCAA National Championship while our indoor teams continue their regular seasons. Make sure to stay tuned to AlgonquinWolves.com for all the details.
