Week 3 was another busy one with all 4 outdoor teams on the road. Meanwhile our women's basketball and both our volleyball teams got their pre-season schedules started. Let's take a look at how each team fared.
Women's Soccer (4-0-1)
No rest for the wicked for our women's soccer team. After playing on back-to-back days on home opening weekend the Wolves were back in action on Wednesday September 18th in Belleville for a date with the Loyalist Lancers (1-5-0). Samantha Jones has been a force so far this season and Wednesday was no exception. Jones scored her 3rd of the season in the 12th minute to get scoring started for the Wolves. She currently sits in a tie for 2nd in the OCAA in assists and 10th in goals. 8 minutes later Alexandra Aubin scored her first as a Wolf to give the team a 2-0 lead that they would take into the locker room. After being held off the scoresheet for the first time in 2024 against the Lords last Sunday, Jordan Blades-McHenry scored the 3rd Wolves goal in the 59th minute. Algonquin would add one more in the 90th minute when Sabrina Fraser scored her first goal of her OCAA career. Wolves keeper Mariah Harper was perfect on the day stopping all 6 shots she faced.
Next up for coach Basil Phillips' squad was a trip to Sudbury on Saturday September 21st to take on the Cambrian Golden-Shield. These two teams had some recent history of close games. They met 3 times in 2023, with Cambrian securing a come from behind win in Ottawa in their first matchup. They played to a 0-0 draw in the rematch just 7 days later. Algonquin had the last laugh earning a 2-0 win on the road in the first round of the OCAA playoffs. The 2024 matchup felt very similar to the last regular season trip to Sudbury with a 0-0 final score. Keeper Paige King earned the 3rd Wolves shutout of the season. Cambrian and Algonquin will meet again in Ottawa for the final game of the regular season on October 12th.
Next up for the Wolves is a rematch with the Durham Lords on Saturday September 28th in Oshawa.
Men's Soccer (4-0-0)
Our men's soccer team put their undefeated record on the line against the 1-2-1 Cambrian Golden Shield in Sudbury on Saturday September 21st. Cambrian has proven to be a tough matchup, playing the Wolves tight in the past couple seasons and Saturday's game was no different. The Wolves took an early 1-0 lead in the 9th minute when Cristian Aviles-Molina assisted on Jaeden Mercure's OCAA leading 7th goal of the season. That would be the only goal scored in both matches and Algonquin came away with the win improving their league record to 4-0-0. Keeper Nicholas Perry stopped all 3 Cambrian shots for the 2nd clean sheet of the season. The Wolves currently hold the top spot in the OCAA East, the 1 seed in the OCAA overall rankings and are waiting to see if their 4th place CCAA National ranking will improve this week.
The Wolves will hit the road again next weekend for their toughest test yet. On Friday they will take on the 3-0-1 Centennial Colts who have given up just 1 goal all season long. On Saturday the team will head down to Oshawa for a rematch with the Durham Lords.
Women's Rugby 7s (3-4-0)
Our Women's Rugby 7s team was in action this weekend in Kingston for their second tournament of the season hosted by the St. Lawrence Surge. This time around East would meet West with all teams convening in Kingston for a 2 day tournament.
It was a rough start to the weekend with the Wolves dropping both their matches to Durham and Humber on Saturday. Luckily the team bounced back on Sunday to pick up 2 wins and finish the weekend with a .500 record.
In the first win of the day against Conestoga, after trailing early Kari Read scored the first Wolves try of the weekend converted by Sydney Seymour to give the Wolves a 7-5 lead. Seymour would score a try of her own a few minutes later and make the convert to extend the Algonquin lead. The Condors would threaten scoring in the 13th minute to cut the lead to 12-10, but Faiza Faucher-Ahmed put the game away scoring in at the 18 minute mark and securing the 19-12 win.
In the second game against the Seneca Sting, the Wolves would once again find themselves in an early hole with Seneca scoring a try and completing the conversion in the 3rd minute. Luckily they didn't trail for long with Sydney Seymour tying the game just 1 minute later. It was all Wolves from there scoring 3 more tries and finishing with a 22-7 win. Mackenzie Cosh scored the go ahead try in the 8th minute and Faiza Faucher-Ahmed scored the last 2 to once again put the game out of reach.
The results from the weekend has the Wolves in the 4th spot of the OCAA standings with a 3-4 record. Next up is a trip to Peterborough on Saturday September 28th where they will play Loyalist, St. Lawrence and Fleming.
Men's Rugby (0-2-0)
After starting the season at home, our Men's Rugby team hit the road for the first time in 2024 when they took on the Conestoga Condors (1-0) in Kitchener on Saturday September 21st. Conestoga was coming off a win against the 2023 champion Durham Lords in week 1.
After a tough outing in week 1, coach Geoff Tomlinson's squad showed improvement in week 2 putting up a fight against the Condors. The team played strong defensively and Rowan Guy-Armstrong and Tanner Watson scored the first two Wolves tries of the season. Luke Flores and Aung Thein went 2/2 on convert attempts. The Condors came away with a 29-14 victory.
The Wolves head to Toronto next weekend to take on the Seneca Sting (0-1-1). Both teams will be looking for their first wins of the season.
