Wolves Weekend Recap Sept 29th - Oct 1st

Wolves Weekend Recap Sept 29th - Oct 1st

Another weekend has passed with all four of our Wolves teams in action.  Here's how it went down.

Women's Soccer (4-3-1)

After 3 straight games on the road, the women's soccer team we're back at home for a couple of games against the Seneca Sting and George Brown Huskies.  Algonquin was in for a test on Friday night as the undefeated and 2nd ranked team in the country, the Seneca sting came to town.  Unfortunately for the Wolves, Seneca would prove to be too much as they ran away with an 8-0 win.  After a tough loss the night prior, Algonquin showed some resilience bouncing back to defeat the Huskies 4-1 on Saturday.  Goals were scored by #7 Nada Ghadban (2), Makayla Pearl and Santina Velasquez-Frizado (1st career goal).  It was nice to see some familiar faces in the crowd, as many Thunder and Wolves soccer alumni made their way back to campus for the game.  The Wolves are in a battle to host a home playoff game.  They 5th in the OCAA East, with the top 4 teams earning the right to host.  The last two games of the regular season will be crucial for the team.  They travel to Loyalist on Friday October 6th and will finish the season at Centennial on October 15th.

Men's Soccer (5-2-1)

The men's soccer team was also back at home after a 3 game stretch on the road.  On Friday night they took on the Seneca Sting.  The Wolves got off to a good start when #21 Mecheri Mohammed Houssam opened the scoring in the 35th minute to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead that they would carry into halftime.  The Sting put the pressure on in the second half and tied things up in the 76th minute.  The game was neck and neck the rest of the way until Seneca sealed the deal with a goal in the 89th minute.  The next day the Wolves hosted George Brown.  The Huskies flexed their muscle on route to a 4-0 win.  The team will play their final 2 games of the regular season on the road.  They get a chance to avenge their loss to the Sting on October 14th in Toronto.  The following day they will finish off the regular season at Centennial.  The team sits in 3rd on the OCAA East standings.

Women's Rugby 7's (7-2-1)

The women's rugby 7's team hosted the St. Lawrence Surge, Fleming Knights and Loyalist Lancers on Saturday for the 3rd tournament of the OCAA season.  It was a beautiful day out at Twin Elm Rugby Park.  The Wolves kicked things off against the Surge for the first game of the day.  St. Lawrence handed Algonquin 1 of their 2 losses earlier in the season, so the Wolves were hungry to get that one back.  The game was tight right up until the end, but Algonquin ended up coming away with a 12-5 win on a last second try by Dorianne Jean-Paul.  The Wolves faced off with Fleming for their 2nd game of the day.  They were able to pick up their 2nd win of the day 17-7 thanks to tries by Elaine Blake, Madeline Clothier and Rebecca Little.  Algonquin and Loyalist faced off in the final game of the tournament.  The Lancers took a 12 to 5 lead into halftime.  The Wolves were able to get into the try zone and tie things up in the second half salvaging a point in a 12-12 draw.  Tries were scored by Elizabeth Syptak and Angelina McCuaig.  The weekend results clinched a berth in the OCAA championship tournament for Algonquin.  They will be back in action on October 14th and 15th in Peterborough for the final tournament of the regular season.

Men's Rugby (0-3)

The men's rugby team hit the road for the first time of this season to face the Georgian Grizzlies in Barrie.  The young squad continues to compete hard week after week as they gain valuable experience that will pay off down the road.  Although they were on the wrong side of a 56-14 score, there were some bright spots for the squad, including tries by Luke Flores and Pascal McCaffrey.  The Wolves have 2 games remaining in the regular season.  They will be on the road at Durham on October 15th and at home against Seneca on October 21st.  The squad hopes to make a push for the final playoff spot in the OCAA East.
