WOLVES WEEKEND RECAP (JAN 27/28)

WOLVES WEEKEND RECAP (JAN 27/28)

It was another successful weekend for our Wolves as they finished with a combined 3-1 overall record.  Here is how the weekend faired for our teams.

Volleyball

The Wolves volleyball teams hosted cross-town rival La Cité on Friday night.  The women's team went into the game with a 8-5 record, good for 5th in the OCAA East standings.  The Coyotes sat just below them in the standings with a 5-8 record.  The two teams last met on October 28th at La Cité with Algonquin coming away with a 3 set win.  This time around was a different story.  The Coyotes managed to avenge their first semester loss winning in straight sets.

The second half of the double header went better for the Wolves as the men's team made quick work of the Coyotes winning 25-9, 25-10 and 25-12.  Jeff Commerford had a huge performance finishing with 10 kills and a team record 6 aces.  The men improved their record to 11-3 and are currently in 2nd place in the OCAA East standings.

The Wolves will be back at home this weekend.  They will take on the Georgian Grizzlies on Friday with the women's game kicking off at 6:00 PM and the men's game at 8:00 PM.  Friday will be a notable matchup for the men's team as the Grizzlies are the top team in the OCAA East and the 5th ranked team in the CCAA.  On the women's side, the Wolves will be looking to get back on track against the 4-10 Grizzlies.

On Saturday the teams will be back in action for their final home games of the regular season against the Canadore Panthers.  Both Panthers teams currently hold a 11-3 record and are in the top 3 in the OCAA East.  Prior to each game there will be a short ceremony to honour the Wolves graduating seniors.

Basketball

On Saturday our Wolves basketball teams took the court at home for the first time in 2023.  On the women's side, it was their first home game since their November 5th win over Seneca.  Head coach Jaime McLean's squad was excited to play at home and they came out of the gates hot, outscoring the Colts 21-9 in the first quarter.  The Colts settled down in the 2nd quarter holding their own against the undefeated Wolves who would go into the break up 34-23.  Algonquin came out of the half with another strong quarter, extending their lead to 55-32 and effectively putting the game away en route to a 67-46 win.   The win improves the teams record to 10-0 in regular season play.

Dasia McDonald had a strong performance with 18 points, 9 rebounds, 7 steals and 4 assists.  Her performance earned her Wolves athlete of the week honours.  Piper Hatherall also had a big game with 18 points and 8 boards.

The men's game was a much closer affair.  The Wolves came into the game having won 5 in a row in OCAA league play.  Centennial went into the game with a 5-7 record and were 1 spot behind the Wolves in the OCAA standings.  The two teams met on November 12th in Toronto with Centennial winning a close one 76-70.  The game went back and forth in the first half with the Colts taking a 1 point lead into halftime.  Algonquin came up with a big 3rd quarter giving them a 67-45 lead going into the final frame.  Centennial managed to cut the lead to 4 with just under 2 minutes to go, but that was as close as they would get.  The Wolves held on for a 74-64 victory improving their record to 7-6.

Carter Normand was the Wolves leading scorer with 18 points.  Nathan Garcia had a big all around game with 16 points on 7/10 from the field while adding 6 rebounds and 5 assists.  His performance earned him Wolves athlete of the week honours.  Ted Braden had his usual double double with 13 points and 13 boards.

The Wolves hit the road this weekend to take on the Seneca Sting on Friday Night and the Georgian Grizzlies on Saturday.  The women's team will look to remain undefeated while the men will attempt to keep their winning streak alive.
