Wolves fans were treated to a beautiful fall day at the Algonquin Sports Field on Saturday October 11th when the Algonquin women's soccer team hosted the George Brown Huskies. It was a special day for Paige King, Samantha Jones and Alex Aubin who would be playing their final regular season home games as Algonquin Wolves. Prior to the game a short ceremony was held to thank them for their contributions to the women's soccer program.
As for the match, the result would not affect the standings with the Wolves locked into the 2nd seed and the Huskies the 9th seed making this contest a good opportunity for a tuneup going into the playoffs.
Wolves striker and graduating senior Samantha Jones made her return to the lineup the weekend prior in Toronto. She would play her 1st home game since the home opener back on September 10th. Jones wasted no time reminding the Wolves crowd of her impact scoring the games opening goal in the 6th minute receiving a pass from Kassandra Da Cruz that sent her in alone against the Huskies Keeper. The Wolves kept pushing for the rest of the half but were unable to extend the lead. Huskies keeper Sarah Anisha Van Wart-Bradbury had a big impact on the game making 13 total saves. The Wolves were able to beat her twice in the 2nd half. Danika Mader scored her 7th goal of the season in the 63rd minute with Alex Aubin picking up an assist. The final goal came off the foot of Cayla Latimer in the 76th minute. Kassandra Da Cruz earned her 2nd assist of the game.
With a 9-1 record, the team just finished their best regular season in the Wolves era. Alex Aubin finished 4th on the OCAA goal scoring list and 3rd in points with 12 goals and 5 assists. Kassandra Da Cruz finished tied at the top of the assist leaderboard with 10 total.
The Wolves will now turn their attention to the OCAA playoffs which will kick-off at home on Wednesday October 15th at 6:00 pm. They will take on the Fanshawe Falcons who finished 7th in the West division with a 3-5-2 record.
