WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SPLIT WEEKEND ROAD TRIP

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SPLIT WEEKEND ROAD TRIP

The Wolves women's basketball team hit the road this past weekend to take on the George Brown Huskies on Saturday and the Centennial Colts on Sunday in the GTA.

VS George Brown

The Wolves were coming off a come from behind win on home floor against the Georgian Grizzlies.  They started the weekend off against a Huskies squad who earned a win over Durham the week prior.

The Wolves got off to a comfortable start, managing to win the first 3 quarters and carried a 56-49 lead going into the final frame.  Unfortunately the 4th quarter was less kind to Algonquin.  The team struggled offensively, shooting just 23.5% from the floor and 0 for 8 from 3 point range allowing George Brown to sneak back into the game.  With 12 seconds left the Wolves held on to a 1 point lead but were called on a backcourt violation allowing the Huskies to call timeout and draw up a play with a chance to win the game.  Huskies #33 Corrynn Parker got to the rim and finished a left hand layup to give her team the lead with seconds remaining.  With no timeouts available the Wolves were forced to settle for a half court prayer that wasn't answered.  George Brown snuck away with a 1 point win improving their record to 2-3 while Algonquin fell to 3-2.

Despite the loss, Taryn Mitchell had a big performance scoring 23 points with 8 rebounds and 4 assists.  Ayslin Stevenson and Meaghan McNamara each finished with double doubles.  Stevenson had 14 points and 10 boards and McNamara had 10 points and 10 boards.

VS Centennial

Sunday's game at Centennial felt very similar to the night before.  The Wolves took on a Colts squad who entered the weekend with a 2-3 record.

Once again Algonquin was the better team for the 1st 3 quarters managing to get the better of Centennial and holding a 62-56 lead going into the 4th.  This time around, poor free throw shooting allowed the Colts to climb their way back into the game.  The Colts put together a 18-7 run to take a 74-69 lead with just over 3 minutes to go.  The Wolves would fight back to tie it and had a chance to win it on the final possession of regulation but the ball didn't fall leading to overtime tied at 77.  The Wolves stepped up big time on the defensive end of the floor shutting out the Colts in the 5 minute period.  On the final defensive possession, rookie Nya Nicholson stepped up and drew an offensive foul on the Colts #6 Maria Lambropoulos to seal the deal.  The Wolves put together a 10-0 run to win it 87-77 and improve to 4-2 on the season.

Taryn Mitchell had a monster performance with a 33 point, 12 assist and 10 rebound triple double, not to mention 5 steals.  Kaity Harvey and Nya Nicholson made major contributions off the bench with 15 and 12 points each.

The Wolves will play their final game of the 1st semester on Friday November 28th at home when they welcome the 5-1 Seneca Sting.  It is the annual Shoot for the Cure night.  The women's team will be raising money for Breast Cancer Canada.  You can help them reach their fundraising goal at the link below.
